opinions on the L1A1 and HK91 clones
I am interested in hearing from people that have experience with both. I am looking into these guns, but have little real world experience on the differences and which may be the better choice. thanks

L1A1 is a gas piston(FN FAL derivative) and HK91 is a delayed roller blowback. Both are considered to be some of the best designs ever for a battle rifle. I have a CETME, which is the forerunner of the HK91. The design is made to work in absolutely filthy conditions. The problem is the rifle makes itself absolutely filthy. As a comparison, in the M-16, gas first travels down the barrel before it comes back through the gas tube and dumps some carbon in the receiver. The HK, as it fires, holds the bolt momentarily, then cycles from direct blow-back. That means that ALL of the carbon left from firing that round comes back into the receiver. But the design of the rifle keeps it functioning. There is areas to go for the carbon and the chamber is fluted to allow shells to continue to feed even when the receiver is full of crud. The direct blow-back pressures even helps not only extract the case, it helps remove some crud from the chamber.
In contrast the L1A1 is a gas piston and as such does not kick near the carbon back into the receiver area as does the HK91. Gas goes down the barrel, enters the port, cycles the piston and "clean" air cycles the bolt group within the receiver. A lot less crud in the receiver. But they still get dirty. If you use any kind of corrosive ammo you need to clean them immediately after use.
If it were between the two, equal quality, and about equal price(or even comparable price for each) I would personally prefer the L1A1. But you certainly wouldn't go wrong with a good HK.0 -
While I believe both are a solid design the choice for me between those 2 is easy. The HK 91 feels funny to me. No matter how good a gun is if it does not "fit" you it is not a good gun. 0 -
sound advice, and I appreciate it. One advantage for the FAL type rifle is that I have a rock River Arms LAR-8 and it uses FAL mags, but then again the HK mags are the least expensive I have ever seen. 0 -
The FAL was the most used gun in the free world, however the HK91/G3 was a serious contender. At one time the FAL was in the arsenal of almost 90 nations, and the HK in about 50.
The FAL and HK guns served in some of the worst conditions in the middle east and Africa.
I have a FAL metric pattern built on an Imbel reciever with Imbel and Austrian parts, and I have a JLD PTR91 built on HK machinery.
Hold both and buy the one that fits the best. Both will serve you well.0 -
Got lucky at the range a while back, got to shoot both on full auto... The FAL is much more controllable.
I have a Century FAL, its not that bad. Only issues are mismatched sights (had to file a LOT of the front sight off to get it to shoot only a inch or so low at 100) and the mags are a tad tight going in. Very accurate.
Of the 2, Id go FAL...0
