What is the purpose of the 90 degree bent piece of metal that is riveted in front of the ejection port? It is held in with 3 rivets.

  According to my reference, it's a finger guard.

  This is to keep you from sliding your fingers into the ejection port. The proper way to hold the rifle is to have the magazine supported by the left forearm holding the receiver with your hand just in front of the ejection port. You see a lot of people shooting the rifle with them holding the magazine, this could in time lead to cracks in the welds holding the mag to the receiver and failure to function or fire.
