Removing Flash Suppressor from 14.5" AR Barrel
Is it possible to remove the 1.5" flash suppressor from a 14.5" barrel on a Bushmaster AR? I want to remove the front site to put on a gas block with a flip down front site. Need to get the front site tower off of the barrel. Suggestions?

Chances are it has been soldered on. It should be able to be taken off once the part is heated up to melt the solder and unscrewed quickly. Also, look at the underside as some were also pinned. Good luck. 0 -
Look close at the flats on the flash hider. You should see where it has been pinned and the ends welded over. That's the way it was on my 11.5" with a 5.5" flash hider.
I ground the weld away and drove the pin out to free float the barrel.0 -
I had the same set up and removed the standard front sight without removing the FH. I'm not 100% up on SBR laws, but having a less than 16" bbl & an AR rifle frame only may not be permitted if constructive possession applies to SBRs. If you have an AR handgun also I suppose you'de be fine.
I used a YHM two piece flip up sight gas block, so getting the thing on wasn't an issue - YHM makes a nice product.
Regarding fronts sight/block removal, after you tap out the pins, a very careful cutting on the base that attaches to the barrel will allow you to remove the sight. A few things I learned are ...
The sight is made of fairly soft steel - a small dremel cutting pad will go through it very quickly. Cut slowly, check often. Little cuts.
You do not need to make two cuts on each sight leg - one will do and you can simply bend them open to clear the barrel.
Confine your cuts to only the area covered by the base - if you do go through to the barrel any cuts will be covered by your replacement. And you'll probably have to do a little touch up bluing on the barrel - the area under the sight base is sometimes left unfinished and the replacement may not cover the exact same area.
I left the gas tube on while I was removing the sight, don't think it makes any difference, I just found it was easier to remove the gas tube pin when handling the sight & tube only.
Easy to do, just go slow & be careful.0 -

It is VERY IMPORTANT to remember, that most of the Mini-Y's came on 14.5" barrels, and you MUST install a muzzle device that will get the barrel back to 16" or more (Phantom, Vortex) and that MUST be permanently installed, in a fashion acceptable and documented by the ATF.
AS SOON AS YOU TAKE THE BRAKE OFF, your barrel will make your AR a SBR, which is illegal, unless you have registered it and payed the ATF stamps, etc. Do not assemble your barrel back on the rifle until you have installed the new device permanently, and dont wait a long time to get the new device installed..... or "plan to" "someday" get it mounted permanently. The reward does not match the risk.
I dont agree with the above legalities, at all... but they warrant mentioning.0 -
