700P Bolt Slop??
Just took possession of a Remington 700P. First Remington bolt I have ever owned and curious about the bolt slop/feel. I have owned Model 70's and 77's before and they feel much smoother without the play. Is this normal, and if so will it get better with time?(I haven't fired a round through it yet). I know this is not a high end tactical rifle, but I expected it to be a higher quality bolt/finish. Any help appreciated.

the rem700 has a fair bit of play in the bolt when open. It is normal. The beauty of the action is it's strength and simplicity, it is very easy to machine and bed, which is where you will the accuracy comes from,..that and a good hammer forged heavy barrel. 0 -

Remember that the bolts on the other two rifles use the non-rotating claw extractor which often gives the impression of a better fitting bolt. The Remington is a simple push feed and as such has the tendency to show a touch more 'wobble' than the bolts with the claw extractors.
Remington, like the rest of the American manufacturers, is trying to maximize their profit margins. While their finishes may have suffered, the overall performance has not. The Remington M700 has been and likely will continue to be the benchmark for factory accuracy.

Nothing wrong with my 700 (the bolt slop is normal), but I would have thought these days that Savage was setting the bench mark for factory accuracy. 0
