1897 ??
Afriend has an 1897 in good shape. She would like more info if possible,ser#615459E 30" barrel choke unknown. I haven't seen this gun in a year and don't remember a lot about it. It is marked 1897. I'll try to get pics from her later,she was running to work. Year of manufacter? In one breath she wants to sell it in the next she wants to keep it, women.

i once had a Winchester 1897, and like many here i foolishly sold it because i doubled my money ($150.00 [:0])
side note: who here has foolishly sold a gun that years or even minutes later wish they had not sold it ??

Blue Book says 1915.
The "E" has meaning to 1897 fans, but I do not know the details.
30" is probably full choke, probably 12 gauge, maybe 16, I don't think they made a 10.0 -

Dont know why I was seeing 1897, but my brain was saying 1887. Yea, there wasnt a 97 10 ga.0 -
Model 1897 serial number E (above the number) 615459 was manufactured mid year 1914.
A 30-inch barrel was standard for the 12 gauge guns, as was a "FULL" choke (marked on the left side of the barrel close to the received frame/Take Down extension ring).
It should have the last style "semi-pistol grip" butt stock, with a black hard rubber butt plate.
Edit: The 12 gauge guns were made with 2-3/4" chambers, and can handle any normal shell. Magnum loads should be avoided, and shells loaded with steel shot pellets are a definite no-can-do. Only lead shot (or a suitable substitute) can be safely used in a Model 1897.0 -

I disagree. Winchester did not make the change from the "1897" marked slide bar to the "97" marked slide bar until circa serial number 725000 in very early 1920. The highest (latest) serial number I have surveyed with a "1897" marked slide bar is 743435 (also a 1920 vintage gun). There is a relatively large serial number transition between the two types of markings.0 -
