Ruger Mini 14

I heard and read many pros and cons with the mini 14. I was looking to make mime more practicle with some tactical applications i.e. railings, adjustable stock, optics. What do you experts think?
Should I attempt this or should I sell it and get something else?
What aftermarket mags do you recommend?

    What makes a mini 14 a ranch model? Is it the receiver that has a dove tail for scope rings or the drilled and taped for a base that makes it a ranch model? I've heard conflicing stories about this and would like to find out one way or the other. Thanks...[:)]

    I had a Mini-14 and NEVER could find a decent 20 or 30 round aftermarket magazine. The stock 5 rounder and a 10 round Eagle were fine. You can buy factory 20 rounders now and I would get some of those. To each his own on the railings and adjustable stocks--I don't care for that stuff on that particular gun but you may. On that kind of gun a nice scope & a sling are really all you need. If you want a "tacticool" rifle I'd sell that and buy some AR15 variant. If you don't care for standard style scopes you can always put on something like an Aimpoint, Bushnell Holoscope etc. The Mini-14 has never been know for stellar accuracy but they are decent fun guns--the new Mini-14 with that adjustable barrel harmonic balancer is supposed to be very accurate but I have yet to see one at a range.

    I never could get any of mine to run for very long with aftermarket mags. They look cool though.

    prioritize mags that function and ammo it shoots well. make it run first before you go using your ar15 funds on making it look pretty. shoot it, shoot it, shoot it!

    Factory hi-cap mags are now available. Get them while you can! As others have said, aftermarket mags haven't worked for me either.

    sell it...add a few hundred bucks and buy an AR-15...mags are cheaper...and an AR out of the box is more accurate than a finely tuned mini-14....I know the mini 14 lovers will be outraged...but its true..hence the reason there are a billion more ARs then mini 14s out there....black rifles are great..they are lighter...shorter, and more functional....plus the mags are cheaper...there are more accessories..and you can shoot more variety of weights of .223 or 5.56 without an issue...not the same with a mini-14

    I agree with shilowar,

    buy an AR-15 with a flat top and then get railed handguards. If you dont know much about the AR-15 just do a search. I like mid length gas systems on carbines.

    Never get rid of a mini for an AR unless you buy a piston AR. The standard design of the AR craps where it eats. IMO not a good thing.
    I was able to get a hold of some polymer mags made by Ramline that fit both the AR and the Mini, and have not had one problem. The mini is a solid design and does not take much cleaning, and out of the box it does not shoot MOA. This can be fixed but it is costly; however, they are great just as shooters.

    I have an employee with a target version of the mini 14. He can ring a 4" gong every shot from a mag rapid fire at 220 yards. Better than I expected, but it is still ugly.

    Whenever I found myself selling or trading off a Mini, and not having one, I feel kinda empty until I get another.

    Same feeling I have when I am without a CJ Jeep.

    My feelings exactly...a Mini-14 is must have for my arsenal.

    Keep your Mini-14. Don't bother buying a buncha aftermarket crap to put on it that could compromise its function and reliability. The only thing you need is factory 20rd magazines and lots of quality ammo. Maybe a spare parts kit with a firing pin and extractor or complete replacement bolt. And the worst thing anyone can do it put some cheap junk scope and lame mount on your gun.

    I have a Mini14, good scope on it and the only other upgrade I plan on is replacing the factory wood stock with a Houge overmolded stock. I don't know why Ruger puts those crappy cheap wood stocks on there, the pull is a little short for me. I wish it was a nice Walnut stock or at the very least laminate.

    If you want the looks of a black rifle, go get a AR. I'm not impressed tricking a Ruger out with all those gadgets.

    Nor I.

    I have a fixed 4X antique Redfield Widefield on it in the Ruger rings, and it seems like a perfect combo.

    It kills coyotes well.

    Oh yeah, and it's bad news for bald eagles.[}:)]
