Cylinder binding after shooting 45 Colt
Headspace should be about .060" with cylinder held forward.
With a .060 feeler gage in place, a .005" feeler should enter between barrel and cylinder.
Rotate the cylinder by hand verifying .005 clearance existing between ALL chambers and the barrel. If the clearance varies from chamber to chamber, the cylinder face needs to be trued up by lathe or carefully using a very fine file.
There should be minimum fore and aft play of the cylinder. Measurable cylinder to barrel clearance should exist with the cylinder held fully forward. Excess cylinder endplay is corrected by fitting a new base pin bushing.
If cylinder faces run true, there is little or no cyl end play and headspace is correct but there is insufficient cyl/barrel gap clearance, then the barrel end needs careful filing. Grind a safe edge on the file and mask the frame to avoid scratching it.
It's possible that both front and rear cylinder faces don't run true
and work also needs to be done on the rear face as well.
I found this on a 1903 Colt having similar symptoms. It was corrected
with file and patience.
