1911 barrel
I have a 1911 barrel with S&W on the right lug and M P on the left. It has a P in front of the lugs and the number 7791193 on top of the chamber. Can someone tell me when Smith&Wesson made 1911 barrels?

I have a 1911 barrel with S&W marked on the right lugs and M P on the left. On top of the chamber is 45AUTO with 7791183 under.
My question is, when was this barrel made?0 -
POSSIBLE- not certain, but POSSIBLE- your barrel is neither 38 Special not 38 super, but an in-between round known as 38 AMU- Army Marksmanship Unit. IIRC, this was basically a 38 Special with the case head modified. My suggestion would be have a smith make a chamber casting with cerro-safe, and see exactly what you have. 0 -
Hello most likely this is a 38 special chambered barrel . The reason it is in a 38super slide is because the 38special colt was a straight blow-back and did not use a barrel link for locking the barrel in battery. Be aware that the only 38special cartridge that will work is the full WADCUTTER target round that the front of the bullet is flush with the case mouth. It is very easy to look at the back of the chamber to see if it is for a rimmed or rimless cartridge AMU cartridge will fit in a 38 special barrel but a 38 special cartridge will not fit in a barrel chambered for 38amu and 38 super will not fit either of the other chambers
Mike I should have stated that if the conversion was done correctly on the 38super barrel "bore out the original chamber and sleeve then rechamber the sleeve to 38 special then and only then will a 38 super cartridge NOT chamber in this sleeved barrel . IT sounds like your barrel that blew was done the cheap quick way buy either someone that either did not know the proper way or was too lazy. I have a Giles and a Shockey that started out as 38 super and then converted and also 3 new AMU barrels in my spare parts 38 super cartridges will not fit in any of these. But thanks for pointing out the danger that wrong ammo poses.0 -
"and 38 super will not fit either of the other chambers"........a word of cation here. a 38 super will fit (and fire) in a .38 special chanber, THIS SHOULD NEVER BE DONE THO, AS THE HEAD OF THE CASE ISN'T PROPERLY SUPPORTED. Years ago I bought a bunch of guns and parts from an estate, one item was as you discribe (a .38 super marhed slide and a barrel markes .38 super), some one had rechambered the barrel and ramped it for the .38 special cart. but never remarked the barrel. I fired a .38 super in it, the unsupported case blew the mag. out and the grips off[xx(]. 0 -
thanks guys for the info. on the 1911 38 spcl. barrel. i have determined with all three of your information post that it is a 38spcl. mid range wadcutter.the 38super will not fit the chamber,both the 38spcl and the38 wad/cut will, do not have the 38amu cart. on hand. again thanks alot[:D][8D] 0 -
I owned and used a S&W Model 52 for several years for shooting several different courses of fire while using BOTH .38 Special wadcutter & .38 SUPER TARGET loads with no problems.I have discussed this with the S&W factory; was told they had heard of people doing so but had never heard of or spoke to anyone who had actually done so. With a slight modification to the mag, it would hold and function with 6 rounds. The super ammo worked better due to the smaller rim overlaid and shot with the same precision as the 52 was famous for.[:)] 0
