Rarity of Model 70 calibers
Hi all-
I was curious if anyone had any concrete knowledge on the rarity of each specific caliber chambered in the pre64 model 70. Bert, I bet you will.
Maybe be a descending list would be nice. I assume it would start with the .300 savage with about 340 made and go the whole way down to the .270 and '06. Just curious.

In Rule's book, the Riflemans Rifle, he shows a chart of all the calibers by number and percentage. So, yes it is well known.

I do not have the list handy either, but I do not believe that the .300 Savage is the rarest (or at the top of the rarity list). 0 -
According to the table on page 100 of Rule's book, here are the top 5 by chambering with quantities:
300 Savage (362)
35 Remington (404)
458 Winchester Magnum (1,226)
7mm (1,470)
358 Winchester (2,000)0 -
Here's another one you won't find on anybody list.
The 9 x 57 Mauser. About 35 years ago I had a M-70
that was factory chambered in that cal. The Winchester
Rep. that stopped in from time to time said he'd seen
Several odd calibers at the factory. Most were made
as a custom or special order items. (you had to know someone
on the inside)0 -

Any 284 I think they came after 64 0 -

Not very likely as Remington did not release the 6mm Remington to the public until 1963. Winchester would have been too busy proving the 243 Winchester was superior to the 6mm to have made a rifle chambered as such.0 -

Post the pictures here for all to see, there are other model 70 aficionados on this sight that would appreciate seeing such a jewel.

Years ago when I was still in the business, I talked with a guy who had a acquaintance who was in the air national guard. He flew supply runs down to South America. To make a long story short he brought back a Model 70 originally chambered for the 7.65 Argentine military cartridge. He supposedly sold it, and made quite a bit of money. 0
