slug barrels vs. shot barrels

Ok, so a search did not help much so here it goes.

I know that a slug can only be SAFELY fired out of a slug barrel, and that shot can aslo be fired out of a slug barrel however it may have a negative impact on the spread.

Question is....just how bad would the effect be and what kind of shot would be best used if firing it from a slug barrel?

    Why do you say that?

    Slugs are safely shot out of standard barrels all the time. Slug barrels are rifled and have a wider choice of more effective, longer range slugs.

    Slugs should not be shot though tight bore guns though. IIRC slugs should not be shot though anything tighter modified choke.

    hmmmm....well, seems I dont know as much as I thought I know (big surprise right?) Ok, so what about the question in refrence to shot being fired through a slug barrel and what effect would it have on the pattern?

    Great question. I use a 24" H&K o/u bird gun. Bottom barrel has rifling the last 6" of barrel. It spins the wad to open the pattern up. Throws a 48" x 48" pattern at 25 yd. Imagine a half a sheet of plywood pattern at that distance. Great for me, not the birds.

    pattern the gun with different shot at different ranges. smooth bores with open chokes or screw in chokes shoot slugs just fine and safely. what gun do you have? smooth or rifled barrel?

    thats just it...i dont yet have a shotgun, so im trying to decide on if I want to get a rifled or smooth barrel first. I would like to use slugs for deers, but I really like shooting skeet as well.

    I know that im going to be getting a 12g. pump for my first as i understand them to be the most practical and reliable shotguns for a wide range of uses.

    I have/had Winchester Model 12s and a M1897 and liked them all. I think slug barrels for either would very rare and expensive. There's a number of rifled barrel/smoothbore combinations available. I've got a couple of Remington 870s and one 1100 with both rifled slug barrels and smoothbores. Mosseberg has them. Probably not good for regulation skeet being a single shot but NEF has em too.

    well a remington 870 or mossberg 500 with a 26" barrel with screw chokes and a extra 24" slug barrel would seem to be the answer.

    switching them is as easy half opening the action and unscrewing the mag cap.

    I have two barrels for my 500. One is for deer hunting one is for field hunting both will shoot slugs. Without a hitch. Niether barrel is rifled so you have to use rifled or foster slugs. Sabots are made for rifled slug barrels. The choke on my deer barrel is IC (imporved Cylinder) in other words there is no choke restriction. My Field barrel right now has a full choke, Now shot from the IC will open up much faster than from the Full.

    I would just get a mossberg 500 field combo, not much more and you get two barrels, one with screw chokes and your choice of barrel with rifle sights. I am not sure if remington does the two barrel thing, but I find the mossberg easier for me to operate. Mileage may vary.
