HP ammo illegal in MA, CA??
Someone on gunbroker had ammo for sale but said he wouldn't sell to CA or MA because HP ammo was illegal in CA or MA??? I have never heard that one...anyone know it it is true??

As long as you are correct in the laws of posession at your end, you are not obligated to ask a seller prior to bidding if he "feels up to" selling to you. I'll bet there's a TOS violation just waiting to be exposed if you've won, and receive negative feedback from the seller because the item had to be re-listed, etc.
Open a support issue.

Well he's 100% wrong about California. I'm in California, just came back from the gun store with some Hornady TAP JHP ammo. I've done this uncounted times, I have 10 Remington Golden Sabers sitting in my CZ 97 and two 30 round AR mags stuffed with 52 grain JHPs - all bought in CA.
Sorry to say, but it seems more than a few gun owners or gun store owners are just unable to say "I don't know".
Now if he just doesn't want to sell to CA or he's not sure and wants to play it safe rather than learning, I suppose that's his call. But if he is stating it's illegal for him to sell JHP ammo in CA, he's wrong.0 -

It doesn't actually state he believes HP's are illegal in CA or MA. He's specifying two states he won't sell to in addition to states where they're banned.0 -
There is no law against fear, paranoia, or ignorance. He has the legal right, & the Gunbroker right, to restrict the sale of his item.
Those of us who could buy from folks like this can choose not to, & that will be my choice.

Hollowpoint ammo is illegal for CARRY in NEW JERSEY. (But I believe it is still legal to purchase it, possess it, or hunt with it).
As to MA, I've bought hollowpoint ammo in MA many times. Every gunstore there stocks it.
Its perfectly legal to purchase hollowpoint ammo in MA, so long as the purchaser has an MA Firearms ID card or license to carry.
Its not legal for someone without either one of the above two licenses to possess ANY ammo component in the State of MA, but so long as you are permitted to purchase ANY kind of ammo, you may legally purchase hollowpoint. If you are lucky enough to be able to carry in MA (ie you have the LTC-A "for all lawful purposes" license) you may legally carry hollowpoint ammo. And of course you can hunt with it.
Unfortunately, shipping *ANY* ammo into MA can be problematic because of the Attorney General's rules. Without going into great detail, the AG's office has taken the position that a special license is required by dealers to import ammo into the State.
As far as I know this isn't actually the "law" but in practice, its had a chilling effect because the MA AG has gone after individual vendors with lawsuits as well as individual gun stores. Now its reached the point where where many vendors won't ship ANY ammo in MA for fear of being sued by the MA AG office or because of "consent" agreements they've reached with the AG office after being sued. (Which was the whole point of the exercise).
Whether or not the AG would ever actually KNOW (or even do anything) if one private individual shipped a box of ammo into the state is another issue altogether. Whether or not he could actually win a case, should someone actually stand up to him in court is another issue as well.
But I can certainly see why sellers might simply not want to take the chance, over a couple of boxes of ammo. With 40+ other states with far more shooters and no issues in selling ammo, its just not worth the hassle worrying about this.0
