Lyman Alaskan Scope question
Can anyone tell me how old this scope is? I cannot find another one like this. The turrets are exposed and the post in the cross hair is tapered. The serial no. is 1473. Thanks.

I believe the Alaskan was 1950s. If I am right can I have the rifle it is on?[}:)] Well I think it was still made in the 50's.

The exposed knobs look like the illustration of the Alaskan in 1939 Stoegers. I have no way to date it before or after.
The pale band at the front end looks like it spent time in one of thost Stith mounts that held the very front of the scope to a base in the open sight dovetail, and a side rear mount to the peep sight holes. Made in a day when rifles were not routinely drilled and tapped for top scope mounts. It is now in an old squared off Redfield, looks like.0 -

Thats where the original leather scope cover has rubbed it, they are still on it.0 -

I am sure the value doesn't matter to you, but just to be thorough- $150-350; add $50 for early exposed adjustments model.
No breakdown beyond "early" on just which years yours was produced.0 -
Hello Todd,
According to the references I have, the Lyman Alaskan was designed in 1937, and first catalogued in 1939. From its introduction through 1943, the adjustment turrets were exposed. In 1944 Lyman offered it in the "All Weather" configuration with weatherproof caps. The fact that your scope has a low serial number tells me that it is most likely a late 1930s or early 1940 vintage scope. For reference puprposes, I have a Lyman "All Weather" scope with serial number 9047 that was made before the end of WW II.0 -

I have a 1938 model 70 in 22 hornet with the same scope on a stith mount thats been on the rifle since new. 0 -
Cartod: dime to a dollar the scope was installed when the rifle was first bought. If you know the age of the rifle, good bet the scope is not any newer. Best, Joe 0
