correct scope ring height for large obj. lens

I have an AR NM A-4 on the way, and I'm planning to mount a Simmons 6.5-20X50mm MIL DOT. The OD of the obj. lens is 2.75" with the lens cover in place. Is my thinking correct in taking 1/2 that #,subtracting 1/2 the tube dia. and using that # for a guide to measure the rings from the base of the ring to the bottom of the ring where the scope will rest?

    If it helps, I have that same scope on my Savage 93fv - heavy barrel bolt gun in 22wrm.

    Using extra high rings, I *barely* have enough clearance to get the scope cover on the front end...

    I am not an AR expert, but a couple of things come to mind. What you have done so far appears correct, BUT. Have you considered the differenc in ht. from the rail to the top of the bbl. where the obj. lense will be positioned. You may have more clearance there than you realize. Conversely, Have you considered your face (eye) position above the stock? With the fixed, straight stocks, your scope may require being mounted higher to allow your eye to line up with scope properly when your cheek is welded to the stock. I wouldn't buy rings, until the gun was in hand, or you absolutely new which height to buy, per the scope mfg. info. HAWKSHAW

    First off I would suggest getting a good riser if you are going to use a scope. I am not sure how you hold your head but I hold my head forward. Most risers are 3/4" then you can use standard or medium height rings.

    I went with a GG&G extended rail and I believe standard rings. Mine has a 50mm objective as well but outside diameters can vary.

    As the others suggested, a riser will be the most economical for you to use. I have had several AR flattops, and have mounted optics with up to a 56MM objective lens on them. I use a LaRue Tactical QD LT-104 mount. It can be had for 1" or 30mm tubes.
