1885 Low Wall project

A question for Bert or anyone who might know I Recently purchased a Winchester 1885 low wall Parts gun in 25-20 single shot which I would like to restore.It came with the barrel,receiver(late design),forearm and butt stock but no internals or screws at all. One of my questions is are low wall parts interchangeable or are there parts specific to this caliber so that in my search I end up with the right ones and is there someone or some company who really specializes in parts for this model? thanks

    I assume that you have a second variation low-wall, and if that is correct, all of the internals from another centerfire second variation low-wall are interchangeable. The only part that is unique is the extractor, which is catridge specific. What you have to be careful of, is that there were considerably more rimfire low-walls made than centerfires, and that the breech block and firing pin are not interchangeable between the two.

    Finding original (or even reproduction) parts for a low-wall is very problematic for several reasons; (1) fewer of them were made, (2) less collector interest, (3) nobody has made repro parts for them.

    Does it have the original lower tang?

    Hello Bert. no lower tang in the deal. I understood that it was going to be a challenge(see:expensive)but what I got I paid less then 100.00 for so there is some room for investment.From what I have seen none of the Browning or Uberti parts will work so original parts seem to be my only choice but I'm very excited about this project as I think its worth the time and effort and your remarks about the extractor and breech block are just the pointers I'm looking for, so any ideas as to sources for parts other then auction side? (which I check every day)

    Ballard Rifle Co. says their Winchester single shots are close copies and their parts fit.

    Wyoming Armory (Which I understand to be a rump outfit of Ballard people after that company changed hands and relocated.) has some parts with more in the works.

    Expensive is right but a good source the for pins and screws which always seem to be the hardest of hard parts to find. Thanks

    I too have heard that the parts and rifles that the Ballard Rifle Company makes are near perfect reproductions of the original Model 1885, but I have not yet put that to test.
