checkering on target rifle stock

Why is it that we rarely see checkering on a target rifle stock? I particular .22 target rifles. Seems to me it would enhance the ability to hold the rifle, particularly with a shooting glove and shooting off hand. Anybody have an answer?

    I would think maybe because the whole idea of the checkering is to aid in the carrying/handling of the gun during the hunt. A target gun is usually just carried to the table. Just a guess.

    This rifle is not a bench rest rifle, but a target rifle used in bullseye match. Positions shot from include prone, kneeling, sitting, and standing.

    My take on this is $$, just like with most things. Particualarly in the case of 22rf target rifles. Production low and midrange cost rifles just can't keep those prices especially if they are both wood and checkered; thats why synthetics are popular. Checkering is usually used as a matter of esthetics, recoil control and other poor grip resons like mositure. So with the 22cal rifles there isn't the recoil problem in keeping a sure grip on them. Though I'd bet if you look at high end, 1000yd, magnum chambered target rifles they probably are....

    Some of the high end target guns that I have seen, be they high power, .22 rifles or pellet guns do have checkering. Cost, as previously said would be one reason that we see more target guns w/o checkering, and pistol grips designed to fit the hand would be another. Lot's of reasons I'd think.

    My Anschutz 1413 International Match rifle had some checkering on the palm swell, that was about it. Checkering is not needed for a small bore match rifle. The hook butt plate, non slip pads on the shooting coat, and the extensive use of the sling for support make checkering a low priority.

    I also have an Anschutz with checkering on the pistol grip/palm swell. As bpost said, the checkering mostly isn't needed.
