How to Salvage Old Leather
Howdy gang,
I've got a few old leather ammo/mag pouches. Mostly Russian, some pig skin others cow hide. They've gotten hard and brittle. Their not worth the expense and trouble of buying restorative products for. Was thinking about soaking them in water.
Does anyone have any good tips for softening them up?

You might try Pentacryl. Can get it through Rocklers or some other wood shop supply store. I've used it on wood but it's supposed to do the trick on restoring leather too. 0 -

NO, NO ! that will make things worse, Neatsfoot oil! it is not expensive, i had a similar situation with my 1917 Bolo sheath, i practically drowned the leather in NF oil. is now supple and pliable, the following is NOT mine just an example to let you know what i am talking about.

I've used Neatsfoot with success. It's takes time to work. I can't argue w/ the capt. though. I have a bud that swears by that stuff. Just remember, if you have a dry leather that's 1/8" or more thick, take your time - don't expect an instant miracle. 0 -
We always use neetsfoot oil to keep harness straps soft and pliable. If the leather is already dried and hard, give it a good soaking in neatsfoot then rub it dry. 0 -
