Please advise on what 12 GA slug to use?

Hello, title says it all. I am working on Afognak Island and want to start carrying my Mossberg 500 while I am out hiking or fishing. I have never used slugs. I do know I want rifled, not saboted slugs, as my gun has a cylinder bore barrel. I have heard good things about the Brenneke KO slugs. If I ever have to use them it will be up close, so I am not too terribly concerned about longer range accuracy. Is there any advantage to 2.75" over 3" rounds? Any help would be appreciated.

    Yeah with 2.75" rounds alot less recoil translates to quicker and more accurate shooting for most people. but if you shoot the max dram 2.75 loads you still get alot of recoil.


    Breneke slug rounds are some of finest slugs you can buy today.

    I carry low recoil slugs. They shoot fine and the recoil is consistant with the old mid brass shotshells. You can put alot of lead on something quick with them. I like wichester winlite slugs, federals low recoil stuff is just as good tho.

    x2 on the Brenneke. I used them in an 18",8-shot Pursuader and was able to consistantly group 4-6" at 100 with them. Recoil was quite manageable and did not cause flinches

    I switch to the Federal truball slug in my rem 870 and the groups really tighten up

    I have shot many different types of slugs in several different slug guns. Huge accuracy difference even at 50 yards. Try a few different ones and find the one that shoot best in your shotgun.

    rifled slugs, I have never really gotten any imporvement with different brands. Practice made things a bit better. One thing you will notice with your mossberg is the slide will come back on its own shooting slugs. no worries it just makes the process faster.

    Been stuck hunting with slugs here in Illinois for the past 20 + years. No rifle season... There can be a huge difference in accuracy from one brand of slugs to the next.

    My old Ithaca would put 5 Federals 2 3/4" in under three inches at 50 yards. Remington slugs would barely even print on a paper plate at 50 yards.

    My sons and I all hunt with Remington 870's, each gun shoots better with a different band of slugs.

    It is true, practice will make a difference, but guns vary and the only way to know the right slug for the gun is by testing different brands.

    I realize you said these would be close up shots, but the ability to reach out is a consideration you might want to think about also...

    I dont want to steal your thunder and post more questions on your thread... so I will use new topic. but thanks for post. good info. good group of guys. good guys to intro myself to. sounds like a fellah can get some good advice here.

    First off, get a barrel with SIGHTS! If you only have a bead, there is no way you can get good accuracy!

    Secondly, check with several brands of slugs. I like the Brenneke's myself, and my guns will usually shoot into 4" or less at 100 yards with them-both in an 870 and an 11-87 (1187 has made one hole groups at 100 for 5 shots-a big hole, but they were all touching!)

    You will be able to make 25 yard hits with a bead. I have used guns with no front sight to make hits on milk jugs at 40 yards.
