Hi Standard question

I was at a gun shop today and found a well used Hi Standard Citation. The slide was modified so the gun can have the bridge type sights on the frame. It was machined down on top so it clears the sight, and serations were cut into it towards the front of the slide, because the originals are now covered by the sight. I dont know how old it is, I think it was a Hamden gun(Is there enough info to get a rough guess Bobski?). My question is, should I stay away from this, or could it still be an accurate shooter. I want it for league competition. The fact that it looks a bit odd actually appeals to me. I just wonder if those modifications can really hurt the accuracy of it. I would assume it would bring the price down having work done on it. I think hes looking for just under 500 for it. Thanks.

    Chances are that if the pistol has been altered/reworked per your description, it has a high round count. This kind of customization, has a very negative affect on value. I would not buy it as a target gun for competition, unless the seller let's you test fire it, or gives you a money back guarantee, vis a vis accuracy/reliability. Be aware if you do buy it and you decide to sell it latter, unlikely your going to get your money out of it. Guns that have been bubba'd, aren't going to sell for what a factory original will bring.

    The variety of HS semis has always left me a bit confused, so perhaps I've pulled up the wrong version, I think there's an earlier version without the bridge?

    I have one just like it but it does not say Supermatic Or Citation on it. It was bought in the mid to late 80's and says it was made in Fort Worth, Tx. Have been trying to find an extra barrell (longer) for this gun but don't know what it is called

    It does look like that, except the front set of serations on the slide are partly covering the words Hi Standard.

    The sight "bridge" on the pistol in the auction shown is factory original - as far as I know, it was on all Citation and Trophy models. I have a Trophy model (Hamden) that is the most accurate pistol I have ever owned.
    As long as the bore looks good on the pistol you are looking at, it should be a good shooter.

    Beantown - I learn something new every day! I just haven't seen a Supermatic with the sight on the slide like yours before. Thanks

    This isn't entirely true.

    The thought was that mounting the rear sight off the frame (rather than the moving slide) would increase repeatability and therefore improve accuracy.

    I don't know if it does or not, but it certainly *is* a P.I.T.A to have the bridge in the way if you are accustomed to racking the slide in the ordinary way!


    While the sight bridge is standard on all of the newer series guns, I know for sure that the older series (eg 103) Citation guns didn't have it:

    The one I was looking at looked just like yours Beantownshootah, except it wasnt a slant grip. I should have looked closer at the markings to see what series it was. But he Hi Standard writing was just like that.

    Hello They made the Citation with both the sight mounted on the slide as well as a bridge sight IF the slide has gripping grooves on the front then you may have an original model not a modified model. I may go against most people likes but if you think about it sight movement in relationship to the bore is detrimental to the pistol shooting to the same point of impact .IMHO even though the slide fits fairly snug to the frame there is still movement of the rear sight to Barrel/Frame. HOWEVER with bridge sight or better yet a rib on the barrel like on the Victor you do not have this movement. YOUR MILEAGE MAY VARY sorry [}:)]BOBSKI[}:)] PERRY SHOOTER
