new gun safe smell
i recently purchased a new gun safe.inside has a strong chemical odor which i think must be from the fabric lining.i've tried baking soda and charcoal to absorb the odor with very little success.any suggestions?

I bought a "STACK-ON" 54 gun convertible... Didn't know when I did, that it was made in China..It has a disagreeable odor I susect is formaldehyde from the glue used to attach the fabric to the metal walls and wood shelves.... If not from the glue, It may be from the particle board shelves...I purchasd a closet shelving unit in Ohio, in the 80's and the particleboard had the same odor..had to seal it with urethane to stop the smell...I'm just glad my safe is in the shop....Away from the family... The odor is not noticeable when the safe is closed....good luck,

Yeah, but you might not like them. . .
-Leave the door open to air it out for several months.
-Return it and get a different model.
-If you think the lining fabric is causing the problem, have it stripped and relined.
-Hold your nose when you open it. (The smell will probably go away eventually by itself).
-Put in one of these (or an air-freshener of your choice):

Many times, the insulating material for fire resistant safes is material much the same as sheet rock. Right now, sheet rock coming from China has been giving off noxious fumes of some sort. Some people who have built using that sheet rock have had to leave their homes. Perhaps this is what you are experiencing with your safe. If so -good luck. 0 -
a lot of particle board and medium density fiberboard contain formaldehyde or similar preservatives to prevent rot or mildew. sealing with several coats of urethane or shellac is an option 0 -

This has been the talk of the town for several weeks, in the New Orleans area. Many hurricane Katrina victims are now having to gut their houses, again, and put in all new wiring, plumbing, and air conditioners, because of corrosion from that drywall. Specifically, the sheetrock is giving off HYDROGEN SULFIDE. This causes things, like pipes & wiring, to corode. So, until you know what is in you safe, maybe you should keep your guns elsewhere.0 -
If you're a smoker leave some good smelling fresh tobacco open within the safe to thwart the smell. 0 -
How about calling the manufacturer and asking them.
Otherwise, try some dryer sheets. Put a couple in there and close it up.0 -
move your safe outside and burn some candles in it to cook off the vapors. 0
