Baikal 380

Looking to purchase a Baikal IZH-70 380. Anybody have any experience with this model? What am I looking as far as cost? Any help will be appreciated, Thanks

    The pistol you are looking at is a Russian Commercial Makarov in .380 caliber instead of the usual Russian 9mm Makarov. It was made for export sales to the US in the 80's and 90's. It is no longer imported. Most had single stack mags that held 8 rounds. Some were imported with wider high-capacity mags that held up to 12 rounds. In my area of Virginia the typical "asking" price is $250-275. Anything under $200 is a very good price if the condition is very good-excellent. They are great guns but a little large and heavy for their caliber. They are almost 100% reliable and shoot very well. If the price is right, definitely buy it.

    They are solid well made guns and the Makarov design is simple and reliable. Something to keep in mind is that right now .380 ammo is one of the toughest and most expensive centerfire calibers to lay your hands on. I'm seeing prices at $40 per box...When it can be found. A pistol in the 9mm Makarov caliber is probably a better option if you plan to shoot the pistol a lot. This pistol is very close to your model.

    Im told there is a Russ. caliber 9 x 15? or something like that. Would that be an alternative to the 380 cal?

    9X18mm, also known as the 9mm Makarov. This caliber ammunition is cheaper and easier to find than the .380, at least for now.

    Since Makarovs are all steel they are not really considered "light" and their primary purpose is a military or police sidearm. The Russian commercial models (at least all the commercial Russian Makarovs I've seen) came from the factory with the large adjustable rear sight and the thumbrest "target stocks". This makes them bulky and reduces their value for concealed carry, at least in my own opinion.

    Who ever would have thought the day would come when 9x18 Makarov ammo was cheaper and more readily available than .380 ACP?

    I'm with Mark. . .if I were in the market for one of these sorts of guns right now, I would really consider a 9x18 caliber (instead of 9x17/.380ACP). Not only is the 9x18 cheaper right now, its probably a little bit better ballistically too.

    If you fancy this type of pistol, there are a bunch of Czech CZ-82s on the surplus market right now for around $200 in the 9x18 Makarov caliber.

    These have polygonal rifling, higher capacity, and usually better triggers than Makarovs. But they tend to have flaky enamel finishes and are a little bulkier.
