M1 Garand muzzle wear

I did do a search for this, so if already answered, sorry to take the time.

I am attempting to measure the muzzle for a friend to see the amount of wear. When I bought mine at the CMP they had gauges, which I don't have. I do have a very complete set of pin gauges.

Since the bullet is .308" dia., what is the pin size (min/max) for a good barrel? I believe this gun is from the CMP (painted numbers on the stock), but looks like the receiver is new (marked Springfield NM) and the barrel ID shows no wear. Outside of the metal has light rust from sitting in a moist area. I am thinking that someone bought a rifle from CMP and added a new receiver and barrel.

Please advise if someone knows the what the ID should measure.

    Take a round of M2 BALL Military 30-06 and place it in the muzzle and if you have a 1/8 of an inch or better the muzzle is good.

    Good suggestion from Pezhead. But, muzzle wear may not matter if the barrel is junk. Take a look at the barrel & WRITE DOWN all markings for us.

    As for the origin of your friend's rifle, I doubt that it is from the CMP. You need to WRITE DOWN all markings on the receiver for us.

    EDIT: Well, that's close enough. A new barrel is nominally .300", & each whole number marking on a MW gauge is .001". A new barrel would be MW=1, +/- 1.0. My gauge goes up to 3.0, but I think the GI gauge goes higher. Beyond 3.0, most serious shooters will want a new barrel, but most folks will find them adequate out to 200 yds even up to 5.0. Improper cleaning (aluminum rod without a bore protector) may cause more muzzle wear than shooting.

    Thanks, that's better then my method. I did get further information after my post from Fulton Armory that states the barrel is .3000+-.0004 when new and each number on the gauge represents .0001" wear, and that approx. 1000 rounds = .0001" wear.

    After I clean this gun up some I will take pictures and provide all markings, as I'm sure that will tell the experts just what this thing is.

    The distance across the lands- the raised part of the rifling- should be nominally .300. MW of 1 would mean .301, and so on. Distance across the grooves should nominally be .308, meaning that the rifling will bite .008" into the bullet upon travel down the bore.

    Very rare to find an M1 with 0 bore wear. When shopping I try to find one that gauges a 1 or less, but have never seen a pristine 0 personally other than a new production barrel. Anything 0-2 should do you very well; up to 5 for just fun shooting or hunting; after that, well it will go bang but won't shoot worth a darn.

    You can also, if so inclined, counterbore the muzzle to make an otherwise good barrel but with a worn muzzle shoot well.
