M1 Carbine firing problem
I know this will sound crazy. but I have to try. This is my friends Universal M1 Carbine.
1. Insert magazine. Cycle bolt to chamber 1st round. Pull trigger - can hear firing pin release BUT firing pin does not strike primer, round does not fire.
2. Remove magazine. Remove chambered round. Insert 1 round manually with no magazine, Fires OK. Now insert magazine, cycle bolt to load, and entire magazine fires OK until empty.
Go back to 1 - same result. Go back to 2 - same result.
In other words, if you fire 1 round manually with no magazine, after that everything is OK for 1 full magazine of firing. But then you have to fire 1 round manually before the next magazine is loaded.
This sounds so improbable I'm almost afraid to ask. But honrstly I am not crazy.
Can anyone help me? Thank you

The M1 carbine has a safety feature that prevents the firing pin from moving forward if the bolt is not completely forward & rotated. I'd look at the bolt locking lugs & corresponding recess in the receiver.
It could be a bad receiver, especially if it is one with dual springs.

Sounds like to me, something about the magazine is slowing the bolt down, so it does not go all the way into battery. If not the magazine itself, it could be the magazine catch, letting the magazine ride to high.
Could also be weak recoil springs.

Is this with all magazines? Try loading your mags down 1 or 2 rounds as the bolt could be dragging on the next round. I unconsciously heel slap the bolt handle forward on autoloaders so I know it's home. Hate a click when I press the trigger...... 0 -
Gut feeling: load at least one round less in the magazine. Voila! (Much better than trying to find out, and correct the magazine alignment/spring tension/binding problem.
Old habit: I use USGI 15 round magazines exclusively. Gives me a 'trouble free ride'. Best, Joe0 -

The slide spring needs to be stretched to give the slide/bolt assembly enough force to overcome the upward force of a full magazine and chamber the first round.
You can also buy a new slide spring but it's not necessary.
This is and always was an issue with US Carbines.
To save a reply, I'll edit this one.
Don't take the bolt apart unless absolutely necessary because of the chance of losing the extractor spring and follower.
Shake the bolt and if the firing pin isn't loose and rattling, throw it in a can of gasoline for a day and reoil it.0 -
Take the bolt apart and clean it well to make sure there is no cosmo or grease in the firing pin channel ESPECALLY if it is a cmp carbine. 0
