Iver johnson date of mfg.

A friend has an old breaktop .22 seven shot he says was carried by his dad in WW11. All markings are worn off except the serial# under the grips. (K 6958) DOM? It shoots fine in single action, but in double action, the cylinder rotates but the hammer won't actuate. He'd like to get it repaired only because it belonged to his dad. Major problem?

    I just happen to be in the process of fixing up a few old revolvers right now. Usually that's not a big problem to fix. If you're fixing it yourself, you can go to Numrich's online and download a schematic and purchase the necessary internal parts pretty cheap. You'll need to ID the model number.

    an iver johnson 7 shot 22 top break revolver with the serial number K6958 would be a '22 supershot automatic' manufactured between 1928 and 1941. serial numbe K6958 was manufactured in 1930, there were 4,300 of this model manufactured that year. none of these revolvers were ever purchased by the government.

    Features HAMMER the HAMMER ACTION, MODEL 70 (chambered for 7 rounds), MODEL 90 (chambered for 9 rounds); Built on the Safety Automatic Hammer Third Model large frame.     Thanks for the info. This is a snub nose and on a VERY small frame but the date is probably right. In its present condition,I would guess it's worth about $35 and only because the owl grips are in very good shape. I agree, the gov. never issued this, but I didn't want to argue with him on his 60th birthday.

    the letter code used on the small frame 22 rimfire third model safety automatic hammer revolver was E. a small frame serial number E6958 would have been much earlier if fact 1910.

    a large frame iver johnson top break revolver is more like a medium frame in some other companies revolvers. the only way to tell for sure what this is would be pictures and a measurement of the frame and barrel. my guess is someone cut the barrel which would account for the lack of markings and added the small grips.

    The cylinder measures 1 3/8 ". Barrel is 2.0". Greatest distance from butt to barrel hinge measured at an angle is about 5 1/4"Serial # is K6956. I misread the number twice ,but the letter is definitely a K.See my later post. You may be right about the barrel being cut.

    iver johnson top break revolvers all model frame lengths;
    small frame= 4 1/2 inches
    large frame= 5 1/8 inches
    cylinder length of the small frame models is 7/8 of an inch

    the standard 6 inch barrel of the large frame 22 supershot cut to 2 inches would eleminate the barrel marking. all factory 2 inch barrel lengths after 1904 had the company name and address marked on the left side of the barrel.

    1904-only= small frame hammer safety automatic revolver 32 Centerfire
    1928-1941= large frame 22 supershot only offered with a 6 inch barrel.

    pictures are going to be the only way to tell for sure what this revolver is. if it is original or one that has been altered and what parts would be needed for its repair. i do have one iver johnson safety automatic revolver that is mis-stamped with the wrong letter code, but it is mis-stamped between a hammer and hammerless version of the same model (large frame 38 second model). because of the firing pin it is highly unlikely that a small frame 22 second model would have been marked with the letter code of a small frame 32 centerfire. the extra machining that was needed for the rimfire firing pin was the reason the 22 rimfire small frame had its own serial number series.
