Winchester M1 Carbine Value

Have a friend that has a Winchester M1 Carbine. Wondering what it is worth. Apparently the NRA was selling these way back when after the war. This is all Winchester, everything stamped with W. Serial number 654**** places it late 44 - Jan. 45. Here are some pics. Also, does anybody know what that tool is in the last picture. He said it came with it and there is another one that is brass he is looking for.

    Father-in-law just showed me a rifle he bought from a magizine ad years ago. he never fired it, just cleaned it up and wrapped up and put away. had a difficult time even finding it to show it to me. the only thing wrong with it is the ears that protect the front sight have a bit of wear to them.
    curious about the value of this rifle. also is there a way to figure out when it as built?

    It is really hard to tell without some good quality, close up pictures. It is most likely an arsenal rebuild if he got it out of a magazine. However, being built on a Winchester reciever has its merits. It all depends on overall condition, and originality....$500.00 would most likely be a good starting point.

    All USGI M1 carbines were built during WW2. The serial number may help with the approximate year.

    Right now it depends upon how correct it is, who wants it and how much he wants it.

    The two auctions below saw Winchester Carbines go for over $ 2,000.00.

    Obviously if yours is a grab-bag of parts, it will be much less.

    FWIW, at a recent local gun show, service grade Inlands, and in some cases, fairly rough service grade Inlands were selling for $ 800.00 and up.

    Just an interesting note...back in the early 60's the NRA offered their members a Colt 45 Auto for $16 or a M1 Carbine for $20. I selected the carbine...when it arrived (months later)...it was a Winchester! I was a young 21 year-old kid at the time...I shot the heck out of it...and sold it for 50 BUCKS!!! Mine came from the Tex-Arkana Arsenal...and I think it was new in grease! I more than doubled my money at the time...BUT $2000...WOW!!!

    To clarify my above note...The offer was for GOVERNMENT Auto 45's and GOVERNMENT M1 Carbines...the manufacture of either could have been from several different companies. The carbine I received was a Winchester. I am now kind of looking for an IBM Carbine since I worked for IBM for 30 years and retired from them as well.
