anatomically correct
I know I'm being lazy, but I don't want to buy a book to find out when one gun was made. Anyone give me an approximate date on a Smith and Wesson pre-model 10 38 special serial number 246XX? Much abliged. I fixin' to consummate a deal and just would like to know.

    Without more info, it looks like 1915-16.

    Your inquiry is a little vague. It is not clear if infact you have stated the ser# correctly.

    If your gun is 24,000 range with no prefix letter, it was made in 1902/1903.

    If your gun is 240,000 range with no prefix letter, it was made in 1915/1916.

    If you omitted the K prefix on the ser# with 24,000 range, it was made in 1948.

    A K prefix gun with 240,000 ser# was made in 1955.

    A V prefix will indicate a 'victory' model made 1942/1945.

    Prefix letters may be seperated from the rest of the number but are necessary for accurate dating. Check the bottom of the grip frame(sometimes it is necessary to remove the grips to read the ser# there) & re-post if you still have a question.

    Now I AM confused. On the butt of the gun is the serial #C 24634, but when I open the cylinder, on the yoke is the #R 27528 and on the inside right grip is the number 14835, plus some ink stamped numbers and letters I think read $$ ?? / 1/4 1/2 3/4 339. I am assuming the grips are not original, but the two sets of serial numbers baffle me. I don't mind if it is a clunker, since it is mostly for play. Any help you can give would be deeply appreciated.

    The serial number is the one on the butt of the gun.
    The number under the yoke is a "fitting number" used only in-house at the factory.
    Grips used to be numbered to the gun, sounds like yours were swapped around over the years.

    I don't have the book but recall from other posts that a C prefix dates from sometime post WW II.

    Hawk is correct in his post. C1-C223998 were made in the 1948/1951 time span. The C-prefix numbers included models 10, 11, 12, 45, & the Aircrewman plus their pre-numbered models.

    To be sure of the exact configuration, finish, shipping date, & shipping destination, you will have to contact www.smith-wesson.com
    & request a factory letter.
