410 shell question?

Hello, I have a 410 bolt action shotgun that was actually my grandfathers but given to me. Anyways I have had it now for a few years and shot it several times. I have always been using either 2 3/4 inch shells or 3 inch shells but recently was given some 2 1/2 inch rifled slugs(410 of course). My question is are the 2 1/2 shells safe to use with any 410 shotgun or only certain models?. I am guessing it wont be a problem but much rather make sure first :)

    IIRC, the standar 410 shell was TWO inch- and then lengthened to 2.5 inches. Then along came the 3 inch. Cannot recall a 2.75 inch 410. If you have a 3 inch 410, the 2.5s should be fine.

    I won't omment on your shotgun, but want to point out that shotgun shells are measured by their fired length. IOW a 3" shell with a rolled crimp will be longer (unfired) than a 3" shell with a folded crimp.
    As a rule of thumb, shells with a length designation shorter than the chamber designation are perfectly safe to fire, but just because longer shells may fit (unfired) dosn't mean they are safe to fire. Example, unfired 3" 12ga shells are shorter than a 2 3/4" chamber, but when the mouth unfolds it will be into the forcing cone area and will act like a partial obstruction in the barrel.

    Okay thanks for the info, the barrel does say 3 inch right on it so should be then :)

    I have seen people but 3in shells in a 2.5 chamber before, and there were no ill effects. Alwasys as a rule of thumb follow what the barrel is stamped with. I do not recomend shooting 3inchers in a 2.5 chamber just so were clear. I have seen it done is all.

    Okay I agree, I am not planning on putting anything that would be bigger then the chamber. the chamber is 3 inch and wanted to make sure it was okay to shoot 2 1/2 inch shells thru it. I have been shooting 2 3/4 inch and 3 inch shells thru it but never had the 2 1/2 inch ones so just wanted to make sure it was okay.
