Colt Python 357 Value

I have recently received a portion of my father's weapon collection and was curious as to the estimated value of the colt python I have acquired. It's the 357 magnum model with an 8" barrel. I believe the finish is bright nickel - it's shine, reflection, and flawlessness are almost beyond words, yet I have also heard of an "ultimate stainless model" that was once released so I am not quite sure as to which one I have. I believe it was purchased brand new some time between 1986 and 1993. This firearm has never been fired and still has it's original packaging.

I just can't see myself firing this weapon. It looks completely flawless and untouched, and I already own another 357 revolver. I'm simply curious as to what a python like this may be worth currently, and if it's worth selling or keeping for years to come.

    Keep it! A revolver like that will last for generations. Yet don't be afraid to use it. Colts are meant to be fired.

    Hello, and welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker. You are among the best firearms advice in the world.

    If I were you, I would take a peek over on the auction side at the Python's. See what they have actually sold for on auctions that have ended. That will be a true indicator of what the market bears.

    If it has the original box, it will tell you what the finnish is on the end of it. If it is stainless, it will say so. Pictures would help us a lot, but you need a photo-hosting URL to post pictures in the forums. There is a sticky in the top of the "experts"forum, which describes how to post photo's.

    To answer your question, it is hard to tell what you have without pictures, but if it is NIB as you describe, the value is at least $2000.00.

    These Pythons only seem to be going up and up in value.

    Apart from being iconic, they required quite a bit of hand-tuning to get them in good shape, and its unlikely they will be manufactured again.

    Probably a relatively good investment, *especially* one that is like new in box and unfired.

    Dear ZeroArcane...sounds like you have a diamond in the rough here! GB gets a Python question about every other day or so and most agree that the Python's value is doing nothing but going up. I know I love mine and consider them to be the best wheelgun pistols Colt ever made! You have two choices: keep it NIB and never enjoy it or shoot it and have a great time with it! Since Pythons value has been going through the roof (supply and demand), my vote would be to take it out and shoot it and remember your Dad. Without photos hard to tell what you have, but from your description, and if you have the box and paperwork with the Python, for auction purposes I would not take less than the $2000 already mention, but they are great to shoot and if you did, I don't think that would hurt the value much, if any.     KEEP IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If it was never shot, don't shot it. It will just make the value go up even more. Make sure you keep the box and all the paper work if you still have it. Unfired I would bet well over $2000

    Thanks for the input guys. I'm now leaning towards keeping the python for many years to come.

    To be honest, I never had originally planned on ever selling it. But recently I've become very interested in purchasing a ruger mini 14 and benelli 12 gauge. I slightly pondered selling the python to buy those two new weapons. I just don't quite think it will be worth it in the long run.

    Keep it. Pass it down to your children and that gun could possible be in your family forever.

    You mentioned an 8" barrel, that puts it (I think) slightly outside of the average Python which came in 2.5", 4" and 6" configurations as the norm. I had an 8" "target" Python in 38 Special, it would be worth further investigation to see if you have anything a bit unusual.

    You own one of the best revolvers ever made. It will ALWAYS be worth plenty in the condition you state. If you keep it for collectors value I would stronly advise you to NOT fire the weapon.

    If you have the box, the exact model number should be on the label. The model number will identify if it is polished stainless steel or the nickel plated version. Just need a catalog to identify which version you have.
