shot gun slugs

What would you recomend for a improved cylinder slug barrel 12 ga. I normally use a remington sugster, or winchester hollow points. What do you use?

I use them for deer hunting keep in mind

    I have searched past postings and have found conflicting answers, but I believe the answer is that I can shoot rifled shot gun slugs in my smooth bores. Just want to make sure. My shot guns are Pietro Beretta Silver Snipe over and under (Mod and full choke) and Belgium made Browning semi auto mod choke. Shot guns are over 35 yrs old.

    Yes you can shoot slugs most slugs will shoot through a modified or full choke, but be sure to check the box first. Rifled slugs are designed for smooth bore just check what choke is okay.

    Winchester, 12 gauge, 2 3/4, 1600 fps, rifled slugs HP 1 oz. No statement on choke. Only warning is not to use in Damascus or Twist barrels.

    Would those be super X's?

    They should work just fine for you, but might werid out a bird barrel. good luck.

    Personly seen deer taken up to 100 maybe a tad more, but I would not push my luck past 100.

    I have shot slugs through a o/u. If you can take the pounding ok but do not recomend using full choke.Your auto 5 would be a better choice with the Mod. choke..Just MHO.

    It is my understanding that the older style Foster rifled slugs are safe to shoot thru any smoothbore choked barrel. They just mash down going thru the choke and are actually slightly undersized to the bore size. This is the same style slug sold today with the "rifling" grooves engraved on the slug as sold by Win., Rem, and Federal.

    Accuracy will be horrible unless you have a scope or at least rifle sights.

    We have hit targets at 250 yards with 12 gauge slugs using just a bead sight. Generally you get rifle sights on a rifled barrel, which requires saboted slugs. A shotgun scope or red-dot sight will help a great deal if you are planning to shoot slugs exclusively or extensively.

    Thanks for the info all. My main purpose for the slugs are home defense and for future knowledge if I shoot/hunt with slugs.

    250 yrds. Now you have me intrigued! I'll have to try out my shooting skills. The energy can't be very high at that range. How far can you 'safely' kill a deer using shot gun sluggs?

    HeDog, you've peaked my curiosity. Exactly what do you aim at to hit a target at 250 yds. with a bead sight? How do you judge hold over? Sighted in at 50 yds. with rifle sights or a scope the drop at 100 yds. is approaching 5". At 250 yds. you would measure in feet not inches. Just curious, is there a formula you use? Like third branch from the top of the cottonwood or something?
