BAR Clip FEd
I am interested in buying a BAR 30-06. I used to fire the fully automatic versions of these guns when I was in the Navy and was very impressed by the quality of their worksmanship. All of the BAR's I see for sale have a magazine that holds 4 rounds and 1 in the chamber. Are there no models that can be clip fed with clips that hold more than 4 rounds? any info would be most appreciated.

I assume the BAR you are talking about seeing now is the hunting rifle called the BAR. I am not sure if the are any internals that are even the same as the M1918 BAR.
BAR simply stands for Browning Automatic Rifle so any semi or full auto rifle put out by Browning could be called a BAR.

I think there are some aftermarket companies making/were making a 10rd mag for these newer guns. The newer ones are ment to be hunting rifles and I am not sure how well they would hold up the riggers of heavy field use in a M1918 role.0 -
In recent years Ohio Ordnance Works made a semi-auto version of the BAR, called the 1918A3. No longer in production, you should be able to find one on the 2nd hand market in the (gulp) $4,000-5,000 range.

Yes, I understand the BAR also refers to a sporterized semi automatic version of the Browning automatic rifle which I fired a lot in the Navy. i have a 2nd home way out in the woods in Oregon, There are black bears and cougars, not just a few either. It's about a 1/2 mile trek through heavily wooded area from my house down to my favorite fishing hole in the river. I would like to buy a BAR because it is semi Automatic and, if I am being confronted by one of the above, i don't want to hear that ominous "click" after I have pulled the trigger the 5th time. The gun will not be spewing out loads of ammo on a regular basis, i just want it to be able to do so when and if needed. Right now my main Battery is an Ithica 12 guage shot gun loaded with OO buck shot and as back up, a S&W .357 Mag.

Jerry, I bought this BAR a couple years ago from Ohio Ord Works. Its probably not what you need for the expense. I paid about $2200.

You can get a Springfield M1A 7.62X51/.308 for much less and it will have about the same firepower.0 -

Figures that a CPO would think that the BAR is 'clip' fed. The BAR is magazine fed but the magazine may be charged with stripper 'clips'.[}:)] 0 -

Actually, Chief, your needs are covered (item in blue). The rest are "wants". Get whatever you wish, and enjoy..but take (again item in blue) afield with you. Professional guides rely on what you already have when they go afield. Lots to be said about that. Good luck! Joe0
