Remington 742 6mm CARBINE

OK experts. I am a quandry. I purchased a Remington 742 Woodsmaster in 6mm tonight at an auction. Pristine condition. Only 1 problem (maybe not). Everything I can find about these rifles says that the only caliber made in an 18 1/2" barrel (which this rifle is) was either 30-06 or 308. I does not appear to have been cut. If it was, it was a fantastic job. Original factory sights are still there and the crown appears to be original. Anyone know of a 742 6mm being made in a carbine version? Thanks.

    My suggestion would be to verify the manufacture date from the barrel codes and then look at the Gun Digest from that year and see what it might say. A call or letter to Remington might also give you the answer you are looking for. It's possible that your gun was not cateloged...my opinion...based on your description...it's original!

    Remington makes special runs for wholesalers like Grice that are not cataloged. Contact Remington and give them the serial number sometimes they can tell you if it was a special run for one of their wholesalers

    Well, I just got off the phone with Remington. The only information they had was manufacture dates. Serial number says 1978-79 and the barrel code says Dec. 1979. So the barrel is original to the gun. Doesn't mean the length is though.

    The most accurate firearm I have EVER shot is a Remington 742, .30-06 carbine that was SonDave's first rifle.

    Consistent 100 yard 5 shot cloverleafs from a rest.

    He refuses to sell it or give it to me.

    I helped him pick it (he is a Southpaw) at a gun show.

    He SHOULD sell it or give it to me.

    He is a BAD BOY.

    Isn't he ??

    According to "The Blue Book of Gun Values", 19th addition, the Remington Woodmaster 742 was produced between 1960 and 1980. Calibers produced were 6mm Rem., .243 Rem., .280 Rem. (marked 7mm Express 1979-1980), .30-06, or .308 Win. cal., 22 in. barrel, open sights, 4 shot box magazine, gas operated, checkered pistol grip stock. Mfg. 1960-1980.
