in similar situations I try to alter the cheapest or easyest to replace part. some 'cresent' sytle butt plates are made of cast iron and will break if bent. a small drum type sander works well for shaping the butt stock. your call

Get some inletting black and go slow on working the excess wood away.....

another option, skim fit it with acra glass mixed to match the stock.

The best advice has already been given, work the wood and work it SLOW and you'll get to exactly where you want to be.

    Morning Fatstrat~

After bandsawing the basic curve, I mark about a 3/8-1/2 border on the butt..You can then relieve the center area, concentrating on an exact fit on the outside..Depending on how perfect you want the fit to appear when the buttplate is off determines how much you relieve it..If you're happy with less than a perfect fit on 100% , you can fill the center with acra-glas for at least 100% contact..Just coat the buttplate with release agent ( I just use auto paste wax ), and you're good..
