Handgun purchase in VA?

Hello.

I have an adult relative who has just moved to the Northern Virginia area. He is interested in buying a handgun for marksmanship practice. Are there any "unusual" state or local requirements that he must meet? Can anyone recommend a decent shop in the Alexandria area?

    Don't know of any unusual requirements here in Va, just walk in pay your money, wait for the instant check to clear you, walk out with the gun. Was he a Va resident elsewhere or new to the state? If new, he will have to get his VA drivers license and then wait for 30 days before he can buy anything. He will also need a second form of ID with the same address as his drivers license. I dont know of any shops in Alexandria, I dont live down there, sorry.

    2 forms of I.D. with his current address, (3 if buying certain guns).

    Pay a $2 fee to the State Police for the background check, (as part of the purchase price in the store).

    One purchase every 30 days unless you have a CHP.

    Virginia is a mixed bag of gun friendly and liberally run areas, but it is pretty painless to buy.

    Virginia Arms in Manassas is a very good shop as is Guns and Ammo in Nokesville. Both of these are a hike from Alexandria.
