A quick question on shipping ammo and selling it

Hi
I have only sold hand loading supplies so i have no knowdledge of selling actual ammo. Do i need a license to sell it or do i need to ship it a special way? i have always used the usps but i kinda doubt that they would ship it and i have a whole bunch to sell.
any help would be appreciated

    Ship UPS ground, from a terminal/hub (not a packages, etc. store). Mark package as "ORM-D small arms ammunition". Max weight of 66lbs.

    You'll need some proof the buyer is over 18/21. Some states require a FOID card, etc.

    There is no license or special requirements for shipping ammo, other then you have to ship by either UPS or Fedex. The ammo container can't weigh more then 65 lbs. Also it has to be marked "ORM D Small Arms Ammo". They will probably be able to furnish you with stickers with this on it. Got to ship from one of their depots, or have one of their trucks with an employee specially authorized to handle ammo, ship it. Expect to have them make you jump through all kind of hoops and BS about packaging etc. etc. Unless your going to make big bucks on the ammo, it ain't worth putting up with all the BS.

    Hi Steve 1010---I've got to disagree with rufe snow, on one issue. It may be a pain to climb the learning curve, but once you get a handle on the requirement for shipping ammo, it's as easy as shipping anything else. I have now shipped several small quantities of ammo, with no problem. The exorbitant prices I had heard about, never materialized. Four to 6 boxes have been in the order of $20 - $25 to ship. Go for it!!! HAWKSHAW

    Fedex requires you to take a Hazmat class befor you can ship through them, use UPS and just follow what you have been told above.

    No HAZMAT class, etc, if the shipment of standard small arms ammo is 66 lbs or less. Over that, yes, HAZMAT headaches apply. Here is the sticker you need: http://www.adazonusa.com/images/ORM-D_cartridges_small_arms.JPG

    No license to sell ammo. If you are MAKING ammo to sell, yes, you need a Federal license, and have excise taxes to pay.

    NOTE- since this has come up several times- Do NOT use US Mail for ammunition. Primers by themselves ARE HAZMAT. Ship ammo UPS GROUND, not air. You MAY need to have pickup scheduled, or drop at a hub- most of the UPS stores are not UPS, but private franchises- and may refuse ammo.
