Getting oil out of a stock?

Anybody haveany tips on getting oil out of a stock? I have an old surplus rifle that has several oil saturated areas around the action. Have cleaned it up the best I can but would love to draw out some of the dirt oil spots if possible.

    Mix up a wet paste of whiting and acetone. Paint it on the stock with a small brush so that the wood is covered completely and let dry. The acetone will bring the oil out and the whiting will soak it up as it dries. Brush the dried whiting off with a stiff brush and repeat until no more oil is pulled out of the wood. To speed the process up, you could warm the wood up with a hair dryer before applying the paste. Good luck.

    Ok whats Whiting. I had head of using Acetone. Tryed to look it up but Came back with nothing useful.

    I too have a stock I need to get the oil out of.

    Whiting = Diatomatious(sp) earth = IIRC Fullers earth. You can get it at a swimming pool / spa supply store, as they use it in the filters (offer to buy a "broken" bag, it's cheaper that way)

    Easy-off oven cleaner works like a charm. Spray it on, wipe it off. It has worked for me many times.

    You can also try heat - get a black trash can, put it in the sun to act as a oven... the old cosmo will drip out..

    I also made a hotbox-large heavy duty cardboard box(TV box, etc)that i punched a hole in and put the hairdryer nozzle into, maintains about 150-160 deg with hair dryer on low. let heat up till oil is weeping out of wood then wipe down with mineral spriits or denatured alcohol. When weeping is real light, i then give it a quick warm water wash with dawn dish soap rinse and dry for a day. (dont soak)

    Cheap/lazy way? Remove action from stock, roll stock is several layers of brown paper grocery bags, place in black platic trash bag, place in direct sun, turn bag once an hour. Let cook 8 hrs, season to taste.

    I had to look up whiting too, and what I found was calcium carbonate, powdered chalk acording to the on-line dictionary and Wikipedia. But according to Wikipedia chalk is calcite or magnesium salicilate depending upon where it is from, and not calcium carbonate at all. Sometimes I get confused. DE is also silicaceous, but is used as an absorbant.

    Get an education here much? I love it![^]

    I have used dishwasher detergent, the liquid/gel kind made for use in dishwashers. Very strong. Use gloves.
