M1D Garand Sniper Scope Base Question.

Hi,
How does one mount one of those M1D scope bases, available from E-Gun parts to their standard garand barrel? It does not just slip on, looks to me like you need to remove the barrel from the action then lathe off some metal to fit it? Am I right? Also how does one make it stay in place? Spot weld? Friction?
Any help would be appreciated.

    Can't do it. The M1D uses a special barrel which has a flat area with threaded holes. They can occasionally be found, just check the auctions.

    I put one of these on one of my Garands. Installs using the existing Rear Site windage/elevation adjustment bolt holes, no alteration to your rifle what-so-ever. Takes less than 5 minutes to install or remove and replace with the original sight.

    Does brass and clip ejection clear the scope on this design or does it require a specific style scope?

    I had to rotate the scope 90? CCW (windage becomes elevation) so the the windage knob was clear of the ejecting clip. Obviously, a simple cross hair scope was the best choice. I would assume a scope with the windage on the left side would work well, if they are available. Once that was done, there was no problem with brass or the clip clearing the scope.

    edit:

    The offset requires either a fairly thick cheek-pad or, as I do, you can shoot using your left eye.

    Just my two cents worth, but if you need a scope on an M-1
    buy a shotgun!
