Remington .244

I recently inherited my grandfather's 740 Auto in .244. Will 6mm work in this gun or do I need to find some brass and reload?

    The 244 is the same as a 6mm Remington, the twist is a bit different but not a problem.....

    Welcome to the forums here on Gunbroker.

    That 740 you inherited in 244 Remington, will eat 6mm Remington ammo all day long. You might want to get a couple boxes, one of 80 grain, and one of 100 grain, and try them to see which one shoots the best. The rifling twist rate might not be fast enough to properly stabilize the 100 grainers.

    Original .244 Rem. factory commercial loaded ammo was of the 75gr and 90gr flavor. Since your rifle has a 1/12in twist, the loading really shines as a varmint gun in a bolt rifle. I recommend absolutely no heavier than 90gr.

    The heavier 6mm Rem. (.243in dia-same as the .244 Remington) took a 1/9in twist.

    .243in bullets may still be available in 60/70/75/80/85/90/100gr weights...if you want to handload. If you do, start with 75gr, and go either down to 70gr, or up to 80gr to find that "sweet" loading. Highlighted weights are what have worked best for me in 1/12in twist. Best, Joe

    A Great Gun & Caliber! Shoot it as suggested with different weights...however the 6mm Rem's in 100 Grain will be the easist to find...AND it's possible for woods hunting (approx 100 yds or so) the 100 grainers will shoot accurate enough to get your deer! The gun should have very little recoil...and GREAT for a youngster!
