coyote hunting
i got my .223 spot on with a 50gr hornady V-Max for prarie dogs, so i know that my rig is more than enough to get a few coyotes. i was just wondering if anyone had any tips for me to bag a few, arizona has no bag limit on them so i have been tempted, but i dont want to invest into any calls or decoys. any tips would be great

Well, since you limit yourself to no equipment other than your rifle, here you go.
1. Find a local hunter friend to call for you.
2. Find a hunter with hounds to hunt with.
3. Move to snow country, drive flats, spot them laying out, get permission. "Shoot em"
4. A Coyote, even a dumb one is smarter than probably 95% of our hunters. That's why they continue to survive and spread their range throughout all of North America. I consider them more of a challenge than most deer! If you wish to be a successful Coyote hunter, do steps 1-3 first for a number of years. Try for 44 years like myself and you still will wonder if you have it figured out.
5. Give up on Coyote's before you start. If you can't even buy a hand call and follow the instructions, you sure can't afford to hunt Coyote's.0 -
Here in central Va. they have really grown in numbers we shoot more of them coming to our Hen turkey calls during spring turkey season then we do male turkeys [:(!] 0 -

They do that here in Iowa too. Several friends of mine, have had a Coyote stalk, attack, and tear a foam turkey decoy to shreds over the past few years. Happened to another guy I heard last week while he was calling.0 -
well im trying to narrow my interests, since my closet is packed full of various deer and elk equiptment and my wife is going to flip if she sees me buying more hunting parphinalia. lol. but im a sucker i purchased a cotton tail distress call due to a reconmendation from a friend. when i set up should a spot and stalk or should i just set up and still hunt? 0 -
There are a lot of techniques used to bag coyotes. I never target coyotes when calling but have shot many that came is while targeting fox, mostly gray fox here where I live. There is a lot of literature in the subject. Google coyote calling/hunting and see what you find. There are many magazines devoted to the sport.
I understand there is a lot of public land in Arizona, so spot and stalk could work. Drive and glass until you see one and give it a try, you are sure to learn a lot, get some exercise, and have a little fun.
If you call, consider the wind, your shooting lanes, be still, camouflaged, and focused. When things happen they happen fast when calling predators. It can be a lot of fun and you will never cease to learn. After a couple of seasons we became very successful in calling fox, but it was a learning curve. I'm considering picking it back up this coming winter.

Another idea is to go out and bag some ground squirls, or whatnot vamints you have out and about, in a smallish area. Come back at dusk and see if you don't have some coyotes having dinner. Serve them .223 desert..... 0 -

That's a good one. I'm in Arizona (Phoenix area) and the area we use to hunt coyotes has a lot of areas where you find what little is left of their meals. My buddy has a call and we both wear camo.0 -
