L.C. Smith problems

I dry fired my 12 gauge L.C. Smith (1920) attempting to remove a roughed up screw from the barrel opening lever. I have ordered and received the lever screw, but it is not aligning with the lever, because of presure by the tension spring. How can the lever hole be aligned in order to not damage the lever retaining screw? How do I reset the firing pins?

  i have worked on these before and they can be a bear. i know what you are talking about. what i done was this, take off the stock and remove the side plates. they can be recocked while off. to take pressure off the tang, this is what i have done. this makes it easy.take the bottom metal off. then you can see the mainspring. i drilled and tapped a 6x48 hole. ran a screw into the side to contact the side of the spring. the more i turned the screw, more pressure off the spring. you can leave this screw in untill you have it back together less sideplates of course. get your screw in place, remove the 6x48 screw with no damage to the gun. put it all together and your done.
