1800's Shotgun
Need help with a W. Richards double barrel shotgun. Local dealers are stumped but impressed. Mid 1800's so I'm told, in family over 80+ years. On stock is printed W. Richards, on barrel is printed London Fine Twist, under barrel has J.W.R and some type of tool or spear making an X with 19 in the middle. Water board has same X marks with number 3 on it. Any clue? May be for sale, been offered big money and want to know why. P.S. It is double hammer with rare lever on left side to open barrel.

Westley Richards was a very well known maker of high dollar guns. W. Richards was an attempt by another firm to cash in on their name. Their shotguns were listed in the Sears Catalogue in 1896. Believe these were made in Belgium (crossed spears black powder proof) and imported by H&D Folsome, who owned Crescent Guns. You will also find Barker shotguns, cashing in on names of Baker and Parker at the same time. 0 -
JUst looking on the auction side shows W. Richards asking around $400-600 and Westley Richards going in the $3500+ range. 0 -

You've written an excellent description of your shotgun. A few well made and well lit photographs of the proof marks, maker's name and condition of the shotgun will go a long way towards being able to help you further identify the maker and possibly establish a value range.
Besides, we're always interested in seeing old and older firearms that the members bring to a discussion!
