Colt New Service?

Can anyone provide info on this Colt. It is apparently a Lend Lease revolver as it is marked "Not English Make" The cylinder has a little play when cocked and there is a piece broken from the bottom of the grip from someone using it like a hammer. Thanks for any help.

    The barrel has been chopped, and a crude replacement front sight added. The grips also appear to be aftermarket replacements.

    My WAG, because of the above, it has no collector value. It should be considered a "shooter", at best.

    +1 on what rufe said--pretty sad that someone chopped that gun and did such a bad job doing so. You MIGHT find an original style barrel and have it put back on--at least the gun would look nicer. In the condition it's in it's worth less than $200 and IMO thats pushing it.

    And...........don't check for cylinder play with the hammer cocked; do it with the trigger pulled rearward & the hammer all the way forward.

    Thanks...the person who used the gun as a hammer was probably the "gunsmith" as well. Maybe I can find a barrel and period grips. Not sure I would shoot it but at least it would be a conversation piece. I appreciate the help.

    Definitely aftermarket grips. If Numrich Arms has a barrel you could probably get the thing looking OK & working fairly inexpensively. Looks like an old 1917, don't know though if it's currently in 45 ACP or 455 chambering. Is there a hole in the butt for a lanyard loop or any printing on the underside of the barrel?

    No, there is no hole for a lanyard or printing. There is no cross piece on the butt connecting the back strap with the finger rest side. I put the gun back into storage or I would add another photo. It appears that Numrich has no barrels in stock for this model. Given the overall condition it might not be worth the effort (at least not until next winter when I start looking for an indoor project). Thanks for the help.

    The butt appears to be shortened. Measure from the top of the scallop to the bottom center of the butt. It should be about 3.5-inches.

    I think this one will make a parts gun and I'll just look for a better project. Thanks for taking a look.
