This is one of the earlier variants of the Smith and Wesson "Sigma" pistol. Go do a search for "Smith and Wesson Sigma" and you'll find tons of stuff on these guns on the internet.
You can even use the Gunbroker search feature
The Sigma is a polymer framed pistol that is essentially a clone of the Glock. In fact after the introduction of this pistol, Glock sued Smith for patent infringement for this pistol and effectively won, with Smith settling out of court.
Like the Glock, the Sigma has no external safety, and uses an internal striker (instead of a hammer).
Some of the earlier ones (including your 9c variant) reportedly had reliability issues, that were addressed in the later versions.
If yours does, Smith and Wesson would probably fix it for you.

Another probable drawback of these pistols is a relatively poor trigger pull, meaning one that is long, heavy, and not particularly smooth.
Its possible to view the relatively heavy trigger pull as a safety feature (since the gun has no external safety control), but in my limited experience with this gun, the heavy pull makes it difficult to shoot accurately.
Despite these drawbacks, I think you're still better off with one of these than most of the third-tier guns that retail new in the $200 price range.0
