I saw a guy shooting at the Range today

He had a New HI-POINT Model 40 SW SEMI AUTO pistol, shot like 100 rounds no jamming whatsoever, what do you knowledgeable people think of that, I understand it sell for under $200
Will this be a good protection weapon ?

    No offense, but this subject, i.e. the various Hi Point firearms, have been covered a number of times in the past.

    If you use the search function, probably have no problem reviewing those posts.

    Doesn't appear to be any concensus about them, folks either hate them or love them.

    I'd rather spend $200 on a revolver, I know it won't jam. You can find Rossi and others for that price, they aren't S&W but they aren't total junk either.

    for strictly a plinker sure go for it--for a personal protection firearm there are better weapons out there. 100 rounds with no jamming still doesn't mean it will never jam-heck there are $1200 Kimber 1911's that folks have bought brand new and then have had them not function properly.

    my buddy traded me a highpoint .45acp for an old bow.... i have to say its a very reliable and accurate gun for the money, but of course its no glock. its worked flawlessly for me for a few years, my only complaint is that it weighs so damn much, it wont make a good CCW gun.

    On Hi-points, as mentioned there are a gazillion posts on this already. Go use the "search" feature and you'll get a lot of information.

    In my opinion, if you are patient, do your homework and look around a little bit, you can get a MUCH better gun for not that much more money.

    Plus, in keeping with what I wrote above, its still possible to find externally worn but completely functional Smith model 10 .38 caliber revolvers for around $200, or possibly even less.

    One other factor worth considering is that while new Hi-points cost $200, used ones are only worth $150 (or less).

    If you buy a used Smith and Wesson revolver (or other quality handgun from a top tier manufacturer), so long as you don't utterly neglect it, you can expect to get back what you paid for it, should you ever decide to sell it or trade for something else. In some cases, you might even get MORE than what you paid.

    100 rounds and no jams? So what? I don't get it, what's so impressive?

    Well I guess iwas surprise that such a cheap gun will not jam at 100 or 400 rounds as some I have read in other forums about this cheap pistol.
    My walter PPK .380 will only take good brand ammo otherwise it's a jammomatic, this High Point was shooting cheap crap 9mm ammo.

    About a year ago I bought a gen one glock for $250 and it has had way more than 100 rounds through it with out jamming. So there ya go, you can find good pistols for cheap prices.
