(Single-6) .22-mag cylinder interchangability

Are Single Six 22-magnum cylinders somewhat identical in size & function from '74 up?

Found a new magnum cylinder with the "grooved ring" decoration for $40. Mine's '74-ish, a 64-116xx pistol.

Shipping my pistol is not an option.

  Well it's pot luck. I've heard of people buying non original cylinders for Single Sixes and having them be a perfect fit. And sometimes not. It would likely be close. But the safe bet is to have it properly fitted.

  Search past posts for discussion of how to determine if your cylinder is a "drop in" or requires "fitting". I've had 5 over the years that dropped in fine, but maybe I've just been lucky. Past and more recent threads also discuss the issue of bore diameter and whether or not it may be a problem. Might help to know if your SS originally came with the 2 cylinders or if it was a dedicated l.r.

  Obviously, Rugers official position is that you can have a .22 mag cylinder fitted to your gun. It's up to you which way to go.

  My experience has been that it's not an alignment problem but a "bushing" problem. The bushing (for the lack of a better word) that protrudes from the front of the cylinder must be of the proper length to prevent excessive end-play and also to provide correct cylinder/barrel gap. I think Ruger must do a small amount of hand fitting during production to get the right fit.
