.223 bolt action

I would like to purchase a light .223 bolt action rifle with a walnut stock. I would prefer it to be stainless but that is not set in stone. I would also prefer a barrel no longer than 20 inches. A smooth action and good accuracy is also necessary. Any suggestions?

    CZ 527, barrel may be 22" but it comes with a great single set trigger and the factory spec claims it is 6lb 3oz.

    i would go with a ruger compact or a savage compact...both are superb

    In addition to the two rifles mentioned above, I would add the Tikka T3 Hunter. However, it is walnut and blued, not stainless, and the barrel is 22 7/16 inches.

    Also, the Remington Model 7 CDL is offered in 17 Fireball, but not .223, and has a 20 inch barrel in blue.

    The Browning X-Bolt Hunter and Medallion are each offered in .223, blued, 22 inch barrels.

    The Weatherby Vanguard Sporter SS is offered with a wood stock, stainless 22 inch barrel, and in .223.

    The Remington 799 (mini mauser) in .223 has a 20 inch blued barrel. These are not being imported by Remington now, and dealers are closing them out.

    You have many choices, especially if you want to look at used rifles also. Have fun looking.

    I went with a CZ. I have alot of Rugers including their little 22 Hornet, like it alot. But for a rifle that I know is going to be accurate I choose the CZ over the Ruger. I had a shorter barreled Ruger 77 in 223 and accuracy was not it's strong point.

    CZ trigger is fully adjustable, I generally don't bother with the set feature.

    Only issue I see with the CZ is that the action is not smooth & the single stack magazine is a bit of a pain to load. Being a Mauser action single feeding doesn't work well. I tried,the bolt (extractor) wouldn't make it over the cartridge.

    I often shoot a Savage 223 Model 11 with a box magazine.

    It is exceedingly accurate, and shoots as well as my Tikka T3 with a heavy barrel. Check the prices! I think one can be had for about $425.
