The 5.56 NATO round is loaded to a higher pressure, uses thicker brass, and rifles designed around it have a longer leade in the barrel(leade is the distance the bullet must travel before it reaches the rifling in the barrel). You can shoot .223 ammo in a 5.56 rifle, but you are not supposed to shoot 5.56 in a .223 one. The higher powder charges combined with shorter leade in the .223 barrel have been known to cause blow ups. 0
