Do "They" consider Mini 30 an assault rifle?
Hello Y'all from the sunny south [8D],
I read as much as the next person, I'm ex-LEO and an NRA Instructor and work at a small gun shop during this "Obama Factor" gun sales explosion. I heard most every comment about what will happen and all the false info of what has (hasn't) happened already. I know that "black guns" and AK make the list as dastardly assauly weapons in "their" minds but, honestly, where do you think the Ruger Mini 30/14 falls. For a little detail, I'm talking about it in it's stock form....no side folders etc.
I know, this maybe isn't an Experts subject, but maybe it is. Is there a printed "target" list of weapons that I've forgotten about from the Clinton days??

The mini wasn't on the original ban, but very similar arms were... I think Bill Ruger had something to do with it.
Anyway, I don't think that they'll be left off a future list...0 -
In 2007 HR 1022 was drafted, but never made it out of committee. The mini was on that one. Anything new from this administration if they chose to pursue it I suspect it will be. Anything that is a semi and has a big magazine will be targeted no pun intended. Remember Bill Ruger worked pretty hard to keep the mini on line after the ban was put in place. If you took this general side there would be a mess of people talking about that fall out. 0 -

According to "them" ANY gun is an assault rifle.
Depending on what bill or version you read that "they" would like to pass includes ALL semi autos be it .22, shotgun or centerfire.
Of course that is just to start for "them".0 -
Whether or not a "mini-30" is considered an "assault weapon" depends entirely on the definition used.
The term "assault weapon" itself is utterly meaningless. Its an alarmist term invented and promulgated by those who seen to ban civilian ownership of firearms.
By definition, all weapons can be used for "assault". If I throw a rock at you, why isn't that rock an "assault weapon"?
Subclassifiying military-style semiautomatic rifles into that category by whether or not they have certain largely cosmetic features like flash hiders, bayonet lugs, vertical pistol grips, etc, is stupid. . .something only those ignorant of gun function would try to do.
Anyway, in some states *ANY* centerfire semi-automatic rifle that can accept a detachable magazine is prohibited. (I think New Jersey is one example).
In terms of FEDERAL law, the Clinton era gun ban has expired.
I believe the mini-14 was spared from the last Federal gun ban, mainly because of its cosmetics, but it remains to be seen what (if any) form the "next" Obama-administration gun ban looks like.
Certainly the ones who want to ban guns (and that includes Vice President Biden, who sponsored the Clinton gun ban) want to ban any gun like a mini-14.0 -
It depends on your states law and their definition. It may be in one state and not in another. Here in Cal, they are NOT AWs and are still sold here.
They are included on the list that has been circulating around as Obama's next ban list, but who knows how accurate that is.0
