Newbie wanting to build M16, Need help with parts.
Well ive been looking at building a M16. Ive got an ex military buddy who says he can teach me how to put it together and take it apart if i get all the parts. I really dont know much about all the parts needed to build one and he doesn't have time to get on here and look at the auctions to tell me which go with which. Can someone guide me in the right direction. I see all these auctions with terms like upper, lower, reciever, bushmaster, yugo, milled, etc. etc. and have no idea what they mean. Can i just buy an upper and lower and put them together? I just want to build a "typical" M16, nothing super special. Thanks and any help is appreciated

I think you need to get some books on the subject, or some training, or else this is going to be a very expensive lesson.
Lesson 1: A "M16" is a full-auto, or burst-fire military weapon. Only full autos made prior to May 1986 are transferable to individuals, nor can an individual get BAT-man approval to build one.0 -
Just a little about me since this was my first forum post. I have been around this site for a few years now, just never registered to post here. I own a Glock 19, and a Springfield Armory 45. Ive bought a few parts off here in the past as well but its been a while. Just didn't want to give off the impression that im some rookie who has never fired a handgun or rifle and now wants to build an M16. 0 -

Aren't M16s still made, they just aren't fully auto any more? From what i understood they are still available for sale, but they are no longer the fully auto models. And what is BAT-man approval?0 -
No offense meant, I'm sure. Experienced shooters will [stop/look/listen] when a new firearm is discussed, especially prior to teardown and assembly. There's an AGI video that is focused on the M-16 type platform, with steps on assembly/disassembly.
I humped an M-16 in Vietnam, but I wouldn't touch my newly purchased AR-15 'till I got the video. Lots of information to pick up. And, one other thing..unless your "bud" was an armorer, you probably will do just as good a job as he. Get the video.
There's a website "AR-15.com" that has a step-by-step assembly procedure. The last time I checked, however, the site was under alteration, so you may not be able to access the information you seek from them. If you can, they're darn good. Good luck! Joe

You've been monitoring this forum for some time..so you know that the members are quick to correct a mis-naming of a firearm. It's due to safety more than anything else. The civilian rifles that have the "look" of an M-16 is called whatever the company that's making it wishes to call it. To be generic, you may wish to indicate "AR type rifle" in your posts. It will let us know you are refering to a civilian purchased rifle. Just a thought. And, only the early Colts were AR-15 by name.
Now to NUNN's BAT-man, I'm not sure. Probably refering to BATFE..the federal bureau that monitors all that goes "bang", as well as other things. And, Welcome To The Forums!

STOP! Nunn's right, you need to do some research before you buy anything.
What I believe that you want is an AR-15-type rifle, also known as an AR-clone. This is the civilian semi-automatic version of the US Rifle M16.
Let me suggest that you buy a copy of an inexpensive paperback, The AR-15 Complete Owner's Guide by Walt Kuleck. It can be ordered off of many Internet sites. Once you have read that, get back to us if you still have questions.

In case you screw up, your going to have sugarbugger bubba as a roommate for the next 10 years. Trust me, you are going to really wish you listened to Nunn. 0 -
In other words, buy the dvd mentioned above, It will cost you about 20.00, but you can use it to go step by step. Building an AR-15(semiauto only) is easy, Building an M-16(select fire) will mean you go too prison when someone hears you shoot a burst.
Buy a few extra gas tubes on top of your build kit before you even start.

You will once you have seen a diagram and formal video that teaches you what every part is and where it goes.
The gas tube is what directs the gas tapped from each shot from the gas port in barrel under the sight tower rearward into the gas key on the bolt carrier, unlocking the bolt lugs from the barrel extension and pushing the bolt carrier backward into the buffer tube, it ejects the spent case, then rebounds off the buffer, strips a cartrigde from the magazine and the bolt goes into battery again with a fresh round chambered.
Thats it in a nutshell.[:)]
They call this direct impingement. What it means is gas alone is what cycles the rifle.
Dont let that confuse or deter you though... Its actually so simple that if you do build one, or three a year from now you'll laugh about how little you knew today.
Take my word for it on the gas tubes, you'll figure out why you'll need more then one.[:)] Dont want to ruin the fun you'll have on your first build.
Another tip or two,
buy your bolt from the same company you buy your barrel from... Also make sure you get a chrome lined barrel, they will last alittle longer, be alittle more reliable and wont rust inside.
If you plan on only shooting 55 or 60 grain ammo try too find a pincle countour barrel with a 1-12 inch twist. It'll make your gun alot more deadly to water mellons and milk jugs.0 -

In the army we took apart m-16's to clean them (anyone could teach you that) but actually building an AR type rifle is alot more complicated.
as mentioned before, get the DVD or Kulek's book. you won't regret it.
