question for bert winchester 64

were all model 64 rifles and carbines factory drilled for a receiver sight?

    No, they were not all drilled & tapped for a receiver mounted peep sight. That said, the vast majority of them were drilled & tapped.

    What I have discovered through my on going survey, is that a fair number of the very early production Model 64s (in the 1087000 - 1093000 serial range), and approximately 50% of the 219 Zipper guns were not factory drilled & tapped for a receiver mounted peep sight. Many of the 219 Zipper rifles are found with a factory installed bolt-peep sight, and those will not normally have provisions for a receiver peep sight.

    Of the (190) Model 64s I have surveyed thus far, only (13) of them were manufactured without the receiver being drilled & tapped.

    thanks for the info.i have a 64 serial#1120063 that appears factory drilled and from your info most likely is.

    As I stated, the vast number of them were factory drilled & tapped. The early Model 64s were often equipped with a Lyman No. 56 receiver peep sight, with later guns having a Lyman No. 66. For my survey, can you please provide me with the following information?

    What caliber is it?

    Is it a Sporting Rifle, Deer Rifle, or a Carbine?

    Which type of upper tang stamp does it have (type-6 or type-7)?

    The serial number tells me that it is a very early 1937 production gun. The barrel will have a 2-digit date code stamped on the bottom (under the forend stock), and it could be "36" or "37".

    A 1947/48 vintage Model 64 should not have provisions for a tang mounted sight. Are you sure that it is a 1947 vintage Model 64?

    bert,sporting rifle,32ws,type 6 tang markings. i also have a 64 carbine serial 1374744,30wcf,deluxe wood with sling mounts.no upper tang markings and it is drilled for receiver sight.

    Yes it is factory. Winchester stopped drilling and tapping the upper tang for a sight at the same time they stopped stamping the upper tang with the Winchester logo. Thank you very much for the information on both of your Model 64s[:)]

    bert,my 64 serial number is 1575428 and is tapped for both a reciever sight and tang(plain tang no letters) sight. as i am not the original owner i don,t know for sure if it,s factory tapped or not. if it,s not,it is a very good job. eastbank.

    Here is a rare tang feature that can be found on the WWII era Winchester Model 94 rifles Bert, notice the absence of the upper tang screw hole, but with the later tang marikings:

    Your Model 64 was made in the early part of the year 1949. The barrel may be stamped "48" or "49".

    Winchester ceased drilling and tapping the upper tangs for a peep sight in early 1943 at circa serial number 1343450. If your rifle was factory drilled & tapped, the tapped threads will be blued.

    Now, that is really odd... Bob Renneberg emailed me the exact same picture just last week. Where did you find this picture, and what is the serial number on the gun?
