The 25-06 would be more than enough gun for most black bears if the right bullets are used.

Yes, no, and maybe. Yes the 25/06 will kill a black bear which in a lot of hunting areas are under 300#. No it is not likely to drop on the spot barring a spine/brain hit. In the heavy brush where many bears are hunted, following up and recovering a bear might be a problem if you don't get an exit hole which on bears usually bleeds more than the entrance hole. 0 -
Yes, shot placement is the most important factor, and it usually is the most important factor in big game hunting.
A 25-06 using a bullet weighing at least 100 grains, and preferably 115 to 120 grains, in a Nosler Partition, Nosler Accubond, several Barnes configurations, a good Hornady, a good Sierra, and a host of other good game bullets, would be more than enough medicine to do the job.
A 25-06 is nearly as potent as a 270 Winchester on this sized game animal. Jack O'Connor proved 50 years ago that the 270 Winchester was more than adequate on nearly any North American game. Again, Mr. O'Connor knew how to shoot, and was judicious about the shots he took. And he probably would decline to take questionable shots. We should all be so prudent.0 -
Like it was said int eh previous related thread...If you have a 25-06 currently, then use it. Use a loading with a sufficient bullet...100 grain and up int eh Barnes TSX, the Nosler 110 Accubone, or a 115-120 grain bonded core bullet from someone else.
If you don't currently have a 25-06, do yourself a favor and get a 30-06...much more versatile than anything on the planet...even including its 30 caliber larger cased brothern.
