77/22 10/22 barrel are they interchangeable

hello
is the 77/22 22lr and 10/22 22lr barrel interchangeable or not? i have been told yes and no so i don't know? i thought they were.

  While they mount the same I do not believe they are interchangeable.
  
  The 77/22 has an extractor on both sides of the bolt. If you drop in a 10/22 barrel there would be no spot for the inner extractor. Now if you were to drop a 77/22 barrel into a 10/22 I think you would be ok.

  No, they are not interchangeable. But, with a little work a 10/22 barrel can be converted to work on a 77/22. I did that conversion at one time, which included hand cutting that second slot. I also seem to remember a dimetrical or shank length difference, but don't hold me to that. It didn't work to well for what ever reason and I ended up buying a Green Mountain barrel for it in 17 cal and converting the to the 17hm2. Shoots great now. If I wanted a new barrel for either rifle I'd probably just buy another Green Mountain barrel from Brownells.
